Dead and wounded during the events of July 1-2, 2022 in Karakalpakstan (analysis and lists). July 02, 2023

(Updated)

This material was prepared as part of an investigation into the events in Karakalpakstan, organized by Freedom for Eurasia (Austria) with the participation of human rights activists from other countries. The review being published is a preliminary version of one of the sections of the report, which is scheduled for completion in April 2023. On some of the facts mentioned in the text, Freedom for Eurasia sent a request to the authorities of Uzbekistan.

There are still many “white spots” on the issue of the number of victims during the events in Karakalpakstan on July 1-2, 2022. The initial discussion, which was reflected in social networks and the media, was soon “frozen” due to the difficulties of obtaining additional information. In February 2023, human rights defenders managed to obtain a 662-page verdict in the case of 22 participants in the unrest, containing lists of those killed and wounded during the events. A preliminary analysis of these materials and their comparison with other data was presented in our review “Events in Karakalpakstan: official lists of the dead and wounded and a discussion on the number of victims”, published on February 25, 2023. The study revealed serious contradictions in the materials submitted by various law enforcement agencies of Uzbekistan, the presence of unaccounted victims, and other questions to the official bodies of Uzbekistan in connection with the topic under consideration.
