August 03, 2023

According to Karakalpak sources, on August 1, a former officer of the Ministry of Defense of Uzbekistan, Salamat Orazbayev, was sentenced to 15 days of administrative arrest under Article 202.1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Republic of Uzbekistan (inducement to participate in the activities of illegal non-governmental non-profit organizations and movements).

Orazbayev, an ethnic Uzbek from the Kanlykul district of Karakalpakstan, was previously known for his statements in support of the independence of the Republic of Karakalpakstan. He has a residence permit in Kazakhstan. He returned home three days before his arrest. He is currently detained in Nukus. It is also reported that the recent searches of Karakalpak activists conducted by the State Security Service in the Karauzyak district and Nukus were related to the investigation of a criminal case against an activist from Karauzyak, a former teacher Aiymgul Khudainazarova. There is no additional information on both cases.
