Three years after the July 1–2, 2022 events in Karakalpakstan, the scars left by the violent crackdown on protesters in Nukus remain unhealed. In our latest report we reflect on this anniversary by offering a critical assessment of the human rights landscape in the region since the unrest.
The report highlights the brutal suppression of largely peaceful demonstrators, while the true number of casualties is still unknown and denounces the ongoing absence of transparency and accountability from the Uzbek authorities. It further details how expressions of Karakalpak national identity and aspirations for sovereignty continue to be criminalized, with the state using legal, administrative, and coercive measures to shut down dissent and enforce ideological control.
This report aims to renew international attention on the situation and calls for urgent action to uphold justice, accountability, and the fundamental rights of the Karakalpak people.
