Uzbekistan charges 16 Karakalpak activists with extremist crimes

Freedom for Eurasia has highlighted the detention of 16 individuals in Karakalpakstan under several articles of the Uzbekistan Criminal Code, including “Encroachment on the constitutional system of the Republic of Uzbekistan,” “Preparation, storage, distribution or display of materials that threaten public safety and public order,” and “Creating, leading, participating in religious extremist, separatist, fundamentalist or other prohibited organizations.” In the initial court decision, all defendants were found guilty. They appealed, but on May 16, 2024, the Karakalpakstan Republic Court upheld the original verdict.

These articles are commonly used to investigate and sentence Karakalpak activists. The individuals in question were not arrested during the July 1-2 protests but were later identified through footage by the authorities. When police checked their phones, they found videos of the protests, which was enough to bring charges. The case materials were labeled “enemy of the people”.
