Freedom for Eurasia received information that Dauletmurat Tajimuratov has appealed to the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to make an official visit to him in prison, where he has been held under harsh life threatening conditions due to his activism.
A criminal case was opened against Dauletmurat Tajimuratov following the protests that took place on July 1-2 in Nukus, Karakalpakstan. The Uzbek government charged him with organizing mass riots and attempting to overthrow the constitutional order. However, Tajimuratov, like thousands of his fellow citizens, was simply exercising his fundamental human rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of speech. His case underscores the ongoing repression of dissent and the suppression of basic freedoms by Uzbekistan authorities.
Dauletmurat Tajimuratov has been sentenced to 16 years in maximum security prison KIN 11 based in Navoi, Uzbekistan. Freedom for Eurasia has previously reported on the ongoing threats he faces daily from the prison administration, as well as the deterioration of his health due to the harsh conditions he endures.
The request for OHCHR intervention comes as political prisoners like Tajimuratov face increasing threats to their safety, often subjected to torture, solitary confinement, and inadequate medical care. Freedom for Eurasia urges the UN and other international organizations to demand that Uzbekistan adhere to its international human rights obligations and release all political prisoners, including Tajimuratov, immediately.
